Custom apps
Learn what Atlan custom apps are, what they can extend, how to get one enabled on your tenant, and where to find the full catalog.
Custom apps (previously called custom packages or custom solutions) are schedulable workflows that Atlan has built from patterns seen across customer deployments. An app can extend any part of Atlan: how metadata gets in and out, how it's enriched and governed, how users and access are managed, or how Atlan connects to the rest of your stack. You configure an app once, then run it on demand or on a schedule like any other workflow in your tenant.
For the complete, current list of custom apps, see Browse custom apps. You can filter it by category or search by name, and each entry links to that app's setup documentation.
What custom apps can do
Custom apps package repeatable logic that goes beyond Atlan's built-in features. For example, an app can:
- Bring in metadata from anywhere, such as CSV files, object storage, API specifications, or another catalog.
- Act on metadata already in Atlan, such as propagating tags through lineage or extending custom metadata to new connections.
- Automate administration and governance, such as transferring ownership when users leave or assigning roles by group.
- Connect Atlan to other systems, such as sending alerts to Slack or Microsoft Teams when assets change.
What custom apps cover
The catalog groups apps into the following categories. The examples below are a starting point, not the full list.
| Category | Use it to | Example apps |
|---|---|---|
| Asset management | Bulk-load, export, or migrate asset metadata and track enrichment | Asset Import, asset export apps, Relational assets builder, Enrichment Migrator |
| Governance | Import glossaries, tags, and data products; manage users, roles, and custom metadata at scale | Asset Import for glossaries, Metadata Policy Helper |
| Lineage | Build lineage from files or query history and propagate metadata through it | Lineage Builder, Lineage generator, Generic Miner, Metadata Propagator |
| Administration | Catalog APIs and export administrative configuration | OpenAPI spec loader, Admin export |
| Notifications | Alert people or external systems when workflows run or assets change | Workflow alerting, Asset change notification |
Get custom apps on your tenant
Some custom apps are available by default. Others need to be enabled for your tenant first. To set up an app, you need to be an admin or have workflow permissions.
-
In your Atlan workspace, click Connectors in the left sidebar.
If you are using the Old UI (Classic), click New Workflow in the top navigation.
-
Click Marketplace and search for the app by name.
-
If the app appears, select it and follow the setup steps in that app's documentation.
-
If the app doesn't appear, submit a support request that names the app you need. Atlan support enables it for your tenant. Your customer success manager can also help you pick the right app for your use case.
Build your own
If no custom app fits your use case, Atlan offers other ways to automate:
- Choose how to automate Atlan: compare the REST API, PyAtlan SDK, custom apps, Metadata Lakehouse, webhooks, and MCP for your requirement.
- Build apps: use the App Framework to build your own schedulable app that runs on the same workflow UI and runtime as Atlan's custom apps.
