You will need to be an admin user in Atlan to enable associated terms.

To enable associated terms, follow these steps.

Enable associated terms​

To enable associated terms for your users:

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu.

    If you are using the Old UI (Classic), from the left menu in Atlan, click Admin.

  2. Click Labs.

  3. Under the Glossary heading of the Labs page, for Term attributes, click the No attributes applied dropdown. 

  4. From the terms menu, select the associated terms you'd like to enable for your users. 

Your users will now be able to add associated terms to their glossaries! 🎉

If you'd like to turn off any of the associated terms, follow the steps above and then deselect the corresponding checkboxes.

Enable custom relationship types​

Custom relationship types let your users name their own relationships, with a label for each direction, and link glossary terms to other terms or to any asset. They're turned off by default.

To turn on custom relationship types:

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu.
  2. Click Labs.
  3. Under the Glossary heading, for Term attributes, open the dropdown and select Custom relationship types.

Your users can now create custom relationship types and link other assets to terms. To turn the feature off, deselect Custom relationship types. Existing links stay saved but are hidden until you turn it back on.

Restrict who can create relationship types​

By default, anyone who can edit a term can create a new custom relationship type. To stop types from multiplying, limit which roles can create them. Restricted users can still use the existing types.

To restrict who can create relationship types:

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu, and then click Labs.
  2. Under the Access control heading, turn off Allow all roles to create custom relationship types.
  3. In the Restrict who can create relationship types dialog, select the roles to block from creating new types - for example, Member and Guest. Admins can always create types.
  4. Click Save restriction.

To change the restricted roles later, click Configure next to the setting. To lift the restriction, turn the setting back on.

This restriction controls what users see in Atlan. Users who create relationships through the API or SDKs aren't restricted by it.
