Troubleshooting spreadsheets

TL;DR

Why do I need admin consent for exporting assets to Microsoft Excel?

Your AI can read this via Docs MCPcurl -fsSL "https://docs.atlan.com/install-docs-mcp" | bashConnect

You are likely to require admin consent for exporting assets to Microsoft Excel in the following scenarios:

  • If your Microsoft Entra admin has turned on the Assignment required setting for the app, each user in the organization will require admin approval to provide consent to Atlan for exporting assets. Learn more about the setting in Microsoft documentation.
  • If the app has been uninstalled by your Microsoft Entra admin, this request will automatically reinstall the app once your admin has approved it.

Why do I get a 400 status code on exporting assets?

Atlan recommends that you try again after disconnecting and then reconnecting the spreadsheet tool integration from your user profile. If the issue persists, contact Atlan support.

Why does Microsoft Excel sync show that zero changes were detected?

Microsoft Excel may take longer to autosave changes on the workbook. If you notice that zero changes were detected, retry syncing after a few seconds.

Does the asset export option distinguish between description and user description?

No, the Description column on the spreadsheet only shows one value, the latest description, whether you export assets from Atlan or use the Atlan extension in spreadsheets.

Why do date values in my export show one day earlier than in Atlan?

Date-type custom metadata is exported as a UTC timestamp, while Atlan shows the value in your local time zone. For time zones ahead of UTC, the exported date can appear one day earlier than the date shown in Atlan. The value stored in Atlan is correct.

Why does my export show only one value, or no value, for tags with multiple values?

Tags synced from your data source can have multiple values. A spreadsheet export may show such a tag with fewer values than it has in the source, or with the tag name only. Tag values come from the source, so they can't be edited from a spreadsheet. Set the values in the source and export again.

How do I clear field values using spreadsheets?

It depends on which spreadsheet flow you use:

  • When you export assets and sync your edits, clearing a cell and syncing clears that value in Atlan. Placeholder values such as N/A and Not Permitted are never synced.
  • When you update column metadata in the Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets add-in, you can't clear values from spreadsheets yet.

To clear a value outside these flows, remove it on the asset page in Atlan, or set the value to null through the API or SDK.

Why do values in my export look empty when opened in Excel?

Some values begin with a line break, so the cell looks empty in Excel. Select the cell and check the formula bar, or turn on Wrap Text to see the value. The value is present in the export.

Why can't I find my asset in Atlan's Excel add-in?

The asset picker in the add-in lists only supported asset types: tables, views, materialized views, Looker explores, Power BI tables, Salesforce objects, and Tableau data sources. Assets of other types won't appear. See update column metadata in Microsoft Excel or update column metadata in Google Sheets for the list of supported asset types.

Do spreadsheet changes go through governance workflows or approvals?

No. Changes you sync from spreadsheets are applied directly under your Atlan permissions, and don't create approval requests, even on assets governed by a Change Management or New Entity Creation workflow. Your metadata policies still apply. Spreadsheet edits are recorded in the asset's activity log with an Updated using Microsoft Excel or Updated using Google Sheets stamp.
