Enable Context Studio Private Preview

Context Studio enables you to build, test, and deploy the semantic context that AI agents need to answer business questions, directly from your existing data catalog, query history, and BI tools.

This guide walks you through enabling Context Studio for your Atlan workspace. You only need to complete this setup once. Once it's done, your team can start building context repositories.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure:

  • Your tenant is enrolled in the Context Studio private preview. If you don't have access, contact Atlan support.
  • You have Admin permissions in your Atlan workspace.

Enable Context Studio

To start using Context Studio, you first need to enable it in Atlan Labs.

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu.

If you are using the Old UI (Classic), click the Admin icon in the left sidebar.

  2. Click Labs.

  3. Locate the Context Studio toggle and enable it. Once enabled, Context Studio is available in your workspace.

Context Studio uses query history and BI semantics from Atlan Data Exploration to generate richer semantic models and seed simulation question sets from real user activity. Data Exploration is recommended but not required.

note

Context Studio works without Data Exploration. Without it, Data Exploration question collections and query-history enrichment aren't available, so you add question-and-SQL pairs to your question set manually. Chat & build and Simulate still work. See Create your question set.

If your organization's security posture permits it, enable Data Exploration for the best experience:

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu.

If you are using the Old UI (Classic), click the Admin icon in the left sidebar.

  2. Click Data Exploration.

  3. If Data Exploration isn't already enabled, click Enable and follow the prompts. If Data Exploration isn't available in your workspace, contact your Atlan representative.

Assign access to your team

CES uses a dedicated persona to control who can build and manage context repositories. This persona is created automatically when CES is enabled.

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu.

If you are using the Old UI (Classic), click the Admin icon in the left sidebar.

  2. Click Personas.

  3. Select the Context Studio persona.

  4. Add the users who can build and manage context repositories, typically data engineers, analytics engineers, and domain SMEs.

Next steps

Grant permissions on your query engine before building your first context repository. This is a one-time step per engine.
