Set up conversational AI

Learn how to enable and configure Atlan's conversational AI experience for your organization.

Conversational AI in Atlan enables users to ask natural-language questions about their data and metadata directly from the chat experience. This guide explains how to set up conversational AI for your organization, configure its behavior, and make it available to users.

Prerequisites​

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Access to conversational AI: Your tenant must have access to conversational AI. If you don't have access, contact Atlan support.
  • Admin access: You must be an Atlan admin who can access Admin settings and Labs.

Enable conversational AI in Labs​

  1. In your Atlan workspace, click Settings from the left menu.

    • If you are using the Old UI (Classic), go to Admin settings from the left navigation panel.

  2. Click Labs and find the Atlan AI section. If you don't see Conversational AI in Labs, contact Atlan support.

  3. You can enable Conversational AI for Only admins, Selected personas, or All users and personas.

  4. If you want to create or update assets using Conversational AI, make sure you have configured Create and update metadata from conversational AI from the Labs section. You can configure it for Only admins, Selected personas, or All users and personas.

  5. (Optional) For Customize Conversational AI, click Add instructions to shape how conversational AI answers across your organization—your vocabulary, which assets to prefer or exclude, and the response language. Instructions apply to every conversation in your tenant, and poorly written ones degrade answers for everyone, so see Customize conversational AI for what to include and what to avoid.

  6. Once conversational AI is configured, you can access it from:

    • Atlan homepage or chat tab: Open chat from the homepage or the left navigation panel to search across your entire catalog.
    • Copilot on asset pages: Open Copilot from any asset page to ask questions anchored to that specific asset.
    • Your data tools: With the Atlan browser extension, conversational AI is available directly inside Snowflake, Databricks, Power BI, and other tools.
    • Slack: Ask data questions in Slack channels once integrated. See Integrate Slack.
    • Microsoft Teams: Access conversational AI in Teams conversations. See Integrate Microsoft Teams.
