# Create knowledge folder

Create knowledge folders to organize unstructured documents in Atlan. Upload files to enable context agents to process your documentation and extract meaningful metadata, terms, relationships, and business insights.

## Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

- An Atlan tenant.
- An **Admin** role or an **API token**. Only these can create knowledge folders and upload files. Members and Guests can view and preview knowledge content but can't upload files. To grant upload access to a Member, ask your tenant admin to set up a custom AuthPolicy (see [Access control](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/knowledge-folders/knowledge-folders-and-files/llms.txt)).
- Files in a supported format (PDF or Markdown), each up to 50 MB. See the [FAQ](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/knowledge-folders/knowledge-folders-faq/llms.txt) for details.

## Create knowledge folder and upload files

1. On the Atlan homepage, click on **all assets**.

If you are using the **Old UI (Classic)**, click **Assets** in the left menu.

2. From the top right, click **+ New** and select **Knowledge Folder**.
3. In the upload panel:
 - Select an existing folder, or
 - Enter a new folder name to create one.
4. Add files:
 - Drag and drop files, or
 - Click to browse and select files from your computer.
You can upload multiple files at once.
5. Click **Upload**.
6. Wait for all files to show a **Completed** status.
7. Click **Open Folder** to view the uploaded files.

## View processed files

After upload, Atlan processes the files to extract metadata and relationships.

1. Open a file from the **Files** list in the folder.
2. On the file's profile page, in the right panel, select any term under **Related terms** to open its glossary entry.
3. Go to the **Lineage** tab to view extracted relationships and downstream usage.

## Review extracted terms and business rules

1. Open the knowledge file in the catalog—search for it directly, or select it from the **Files** list in the knowledge folder.
2. On the file's profile page, find the extracted terms in the right panel under the related terms section.
3. Click any term to open its glossary entry and see the extracted business rule text and the catalog assets the rule applies to.
