## Add custom metadata

> Learn how to add custom metadata to your data assets in Atlan.

:::warning Who can do this?
 Any user with [permission to edit custom metadata](https://docs.atlan.com/product/capabilities/governance/access-control/metadata-policy) can add or change custom metadata values on assets. (An admin user must first [create the custom metadata structures](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/custom-metadata/manage-custom-metadata-structures/llms.txt) for those values, though.)

:::

To add custom metadata to an asset:

1. On the Atlan homepage, click on **all assets**.

 If you are using the **Old UI (Classic)**, click **Assets** in the left menu.

2. Navigate to the asset by searching, through discovery, or through the [Chrome extension](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/integrations/use-the-atlan-browser-extension/llms.txt).
3. In the right sidebar, click the icon for the metadata structure you want to enrich.
4. If no values yet exist, click the **Start editing** button. Otherwise, in the upper-right of the custom metadata panel in the sidebar, click the **Edit** button.
5. Enter values for any properties you want to enrich. (You don't need to fill in every property.)
6. In the upper-right of the custom metadata panel in the sidebar, click the **Update** button.

That's it, the asset is now enriched with your organization's own custom metadata! 🎉
