## Create domain policies

URL: https://docs.atlan.com/product/capabilities/data-products/how-tos/create-domain-policies

> Domain policies let you control which users can (or can't) take certain actions within a data domain or subdomain - for example, creating subdomains and data products, updating metadata, and more.

:::warning Who can do this?
 Before you can create a domain policy, you will need your Atlan admin to [enable the products module in your Atlan workspace](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/data-products/what-are-data-products/llms.txt). Once enabled, first review the [order of operations](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/data-products/what-are-data-products/llms.txt). You will need to be a [domain admin in Atlan](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/data-products/what-are-data-products/llms.txt) to create and manage domain policies.

:::

Domain policies let you control which users can (or can't) take certain actions within a data domain or subdomain - for example, creating subdomains and data products, updating metadata, and more.

In Atlan, you can define domain policies for data

domains through [personas](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/access-control/create-a-persona/llms.txt). This framework lets you make sure that your data products are secure and only accessible to the individuals or teams involved in managing the data.

## Create a persona

To create a persona:

1. In your Atlan workspace, click **Settings** from the left menu.

 If you are using the **Old UI (Classic)**, from the left menu, click **Governance**.

2. Under _Access Control_, click **Personas**.
3. If this is the first persona, click the **Get started** button. Otherwise click the **New persona** button.
4. Enter a meaningful name for the persona, (optional) a description, and then click **Create**.

You now have an empty persona. It won't do much until you complete the next steps, too!

## Add users and groups

To add users and groups to the persona, from within the persona:

1. To the right of the _Users and groups_ box, click the **Add** button.
2. Select users and / or groups:
 1. Under the single-user icon, select users to add to the persona.
 2. Under the double-user icon, select groups to add to the persona.
3. Click the **Update** button to save the users and groups to the persona.

Now this persona will be available to those users and groups. It still won't do much, though, without some policies...

## (Optional) Add rich documentation

To add rich documentation describing the persona:

- Under _Summary_, then _Channels_, add any Slack channels relevant to the persona.
- Under _Resources_, add links to external resources like PDFs, repositories, Notion, Confluence, Google Drive - anything that has a URL.
- Under _Readme_, write a richly-formatted description of the persona.

## Add a domain policy

To add a domain policy to the persona, from within the persona:

1. Change to the **Policies** tab.
2. Click the **New Policy** button and choose the type of policy.
3. Choose **Domain policy**.
4. Under _Name_, briefly describe the policy's intention.
5. Under _Select domains_, choose the domain on which to apply the policy - for example, `Finance`.
6. (Optional) For _Configure permissions_, choose the permissions the policy will grant. By default, all permissions will be granted. To select others:
 1. To the right of _Configure permissions_, click the **Edit** link.
 2. Select the permissions required. If you are unsure what they do, hover over the checkbox to see a more detailed description of each one. You can enable or limit the following:

 - _Read_: permission to view metadata, resources, and READMEs for data domains
 - _Update Domains_: permission to update metadata, resources, and READMEs for data domains
 - _Create Sub-domains_: permission to create new data subdomains within a domain
 - _Update Sub-domains_: permission to update metadata, resources, and READMEs for data subdomains

 - _Create Products_: permission to create new data products within a domain
 - _Update Products_: permission to update metadata, resources, and READMEs for data products
 - _Delete Products_: permission to delete data products within a domain
 - _Update Custom Metadata For Domains_: permission to update [custom metadata](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/custom-metadata/what-is-custom-metadata/llms.txt) for data domains
 - _Update Custom Metadata For Sub-Domains_: permission to update [custom metadata](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/custom-metadata/what-is-custom-metadata/llms.txt) for data subdomains
 - _Update Custom Metadata For Products_: permission to update [custom metadata](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/custom-metadata/what-is-custom-metadata/llms.txt) for data products
 3. At the bottom of the list, click **Save**.
7. At the bottom of the _Domain policy_ sidebar, click **Save**.

## (Optional) Set preferences

:::info **Did you know?**
 You can also personalize the details users will see in the sidebar or filters menu when in a persona. This is great to limit information overload, by showing only what is relevant to a given set of users.

:::

To set preferences for the persona:

1. Change to the **Preferences** tab of the persona. From the left menu, configure the following:
2. To set the default landing page for the persona:
 1. Click **Navigation** to view landing page preferences.
 2. For _Set default landing page_, click the dropdown and then click **Products** so that your users land on the data products page when they log into Atlan.
3. To limit the [out-of-the-box tabs](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/access-control/configure-persona-preferences/llms.txt) that need to be visible to the persona:
 1. Click **Asset sidebar** to view asset sidebar preferences.
 2. Click the checkbox to the left of each tab's name to include it (on) or exclude it (off) for the persona.
4. To limit the [asset filters](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/catalog/discovery/use-the-filters-menu/llms.txt) that need to be visible to the persona:
 1. Click **Asset filters** to view asset filter preferences.
 2. Click the checkbox to the left of each tab's name to include it (on) or exclude it (off) for the persona.
5. To limit the [custom metadata](https://docs.atlan.com/llms/governance/custom-metadata/manage-custom-metadata-structures/llms.txt) that need to be visible to the persona:
 1. Click **Custom metadata** to view custom metadata preferences.
 2. Click the checkbox to the left of each custom metadata structure to include it (on) or exclude it (off) for the persona.
6. To personalize your data products, click **Products** and then click the **Add cover image** button to set a cover image for data products within your selected domain.
