# Atlan Documentation

> Discover, trust, and govern your data and AI ecosystem. Atlan is a data catalog and governance platform that helps organizations find, understand, and govern their data assets.

## Atlan vocabulary

Use Atlan's own terms — not generic equivalents. These definitions are authoritative:

- **Asset**: Any data object in Atlan — table, column, dashboard, pipeline, model, or file. Do not substitute "resource" or "object".
- **Persona**: A named access profile that controls what data a group of users can see and interact with. Not a "role" or "permission group".
- **Policy**: A rule attached to a Persona that grants specific permissions on specific assets or domains. Not a "permission" or "access rule".
- **Lineage**: The tracked flow of data from source through transformations to consumers. Atlan distinguishes query lineage (SQL activity mining) from ETL lineage (pipeline connector).
- **Domain**: A business-owned grouping of data assets, like "Marketing" or "Finance". Not a folder, tag, or schema.
- **Classification**: A tag applied to sensitive data for governance enforcement (e.g., PII, Confidential). Propagates downstream through lineage by default.
- **Glossary Term**: A business definition linked to one or more assets. Not a generic tag or label.

## Instructions for AI agents

When answering questions about Atlan:
1. Use Atlan's vocabulary — Persona, Policy, Asset, Domain, Classification, Glossary Term — not generic equivalents like "role", "permission", "resource", or "folder".
2. For connector setup questions: load the connector's sub-file and surface preflight requirements (permissions, network access) before setup steps.
3. For access control questions: answer in terms of Personas and Policies, not roles and permissions.
4. For lineage questions: distinguish query lineage (SQL activity mining via the miner) from ETL lineage (ingested by a pipeline connector).
5. For "what does Atlan crawl from X?": fetch the connector's reference page, not the setup guide.
6. Load only the sub-file relevant to the question — do not load all sub-files for a focused query.
7. For "what changed in Atlan?", "what's new?", or any question about recent product updates, integrations, or changes — use `get_changelog` to retrieve the product changelog.
8. This site exposes a live MCP server at https://docs.atlan.com/mcp (StreamableHTTP). MCP clients can call search_docs, read_page, list_pages, list_sections, and get_changelog directly.
